Summer is almost here, the birds are chirping, grass is growing, flowers are blooming. You need to have a space to enjoy all the scenery, right?
Here in Nashville, it’s already sweltering and it’s only May. Summers can be extremely hot, but the evenings are beautiful. We enjoy lots of bonfires and nights outside with our neighbors and our kids enjoying each other’s company. And it’s always someone else’s backyard, so I have lots of inspiration and decor tips. Kids catch lightning bugs while adults enjoy adult beverages, music and many laughs.
To create a backyard getaway for your family and friends, check out these ideas for inspiration and ideas.
CURRENT SALES
Right now at the time of this post, Home Depot is running a sale of up to $200 off outdoor furniture and free delivery.
Target is also running a Memorial Day sale on outdoor patio department for 30% off. These savings really add up!
SEATING
We got our patio furniture from Home Depot a couple of years ago on sale for Memorial Day. It has held up so welll, I would highly recommend this brand if you are looking for a reliable outdoor furniture set that will hold up year long. I love the wicker material because you can just hose it off if there is any dirt, bird poop, etc. And the sun does not fade it. Below is the most similar set I can find that Home Depot sells currently that is most like our set.
I also love these looks for seating and dining because they are comfortable, cushions can be changed around, and their reviews are very positive.

OUTDOOR LIGHTING & CANDLES
I believe lighting is one of the most overlooked thing in most backyard setups out there. Lighting sets the whole mood when it’s dark out, and you can really spruce up your patio with some nice lighting and candles and make it more homey and inviting. A lot of candles now are made with citronella so they work great at keeping mosquitos away too! We also have cafe lights draped on our entire fence and tree line as well to really light up the entire backyard.

RUGS & PILLOWS
I love shopping for outdoor rugs and pillows. The colors and patterns can be overwhelming, but when you get a good color scheme put together, you will really make it feel like home in your backyard. These are my top picks for rugs and pillows.

END TABLES
Don’t forget about where you’re going to put your drinks and candles! End tables are overlooked just as much as lighting, and a lot of times you just use the ground to put your drinks, phones and things. I especially love end tables with storage so you can stash any extra things laying around to make your space look less cluttered. In our end tables we store extra candles, lighter fluid, bug spray, small toys, etc.

FIREPITS
One great investment you can make for your backyard oasis is a firepit. There are SO many options out there. We like the good old wood firepits, nothing fancy like gas or electric. We love finding our wood, cutting our wood, and the men love controlling the fire. I would highly recommend getting a great material that will not rust or fall apart after one season, because this is such an investment, you don’t want some flimsy little firepit that could potentially tip or anything around little ones running around. And absolutely get one with a cover, and also a waterproof cover for the off seasons. That way you can use it year after year if you take care of it.

PLANTERS/POTS
Whether you have a green thumb or a black thumb, adding flowers around your backyard softens the ambience and creates a more inviting appearance. Big or small, plants are also good for the environment. And did you know that some flowers, like lavender, peppermint, citronella and basil actually help repel insects? They also all smell so good!
