When life hands you lemons, make lemon water!
We all know we are supposed to drink water throughout the day. Do you know how much is the recommended amount? According to the Mayo Clinic, it used to be about 8 glasses of water each day.
But new research has shown that because that wasn’t a one size fits all, it’s best to “try to drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, that would be 75 to 150 ounces of water a day” (According to this article on WebMD).
Once I was pregnant with our first, I knew I had to manage my water intake a lot better. So it became a habit at that point, and if there is one thing that is always by my side, it’s my Yeti Tumbler full of water.
It can be boring and become a chore to drink plain old water though. I wanted some flavor but without any added sugar. So my obsession with lemon water began! And the more I researched it, the more I drank it and the better I felt!
Here are 7 benefits of drinking lemon water, adapted from this article on HealthLine.com.
- It promotes hydration
Ever since I started adding lemons, it made this daily super chore more flavorful. It doesn’t seem like a chore anymore, and the taste is way more enjoyable.
2. Good Source of Vitamin C
We all know we need our daily vitamins, and adding lemons to your water helps with your daily Vitamin C intake as this is a citrus fruit. It doesn’t provide you ALL the Vitamin C you need, but it definitely does help.
3. Promotes Weight Loss
This one is scientifically hard to prove, but some research does show that polyphenol antioxidants found in lemons are part of the reason why, and you just feel more full after drinking lemon water. So you don’t fill up on other food as you normally might have.
4. Improves Skin Quality
Vitamin C helps reduce wrinkling, dry skin from aging and sun damage. Isn’t that awesome? Just from adding this little yellow fruit to your water.
5. Helps in Digestion
Some people believe that drinking lemon water first thing in the morning is a natural “laxative” and prevents constipation. There is also reason to believe that the sour lemon taste helps your digestive system jumpstart and prevent the buildup of toxins in your body.
6. Freshens Breath
Lemons are such an important fruit that it even stimulates your saliva, which prevents dry mouth, which is the cause of bacteria found in bad breath.
7. Prevents Kidney Stones
Citric acid found in lemons makes your urine less acidic and can even be strong enough to break up small stones.
I am by no means a physician, but based on this article, I am convinced enough that I can share this information with you in hopes that you see all the benefits of simply adding lemon to your water. I know I would much rather help my body perform at its best with natural ways rather than medicine whenever possible. So the lemon water train is definitely something in which I want to hop onboard.
How I make Lemon Water:
Wash and Slice 1 lemon and remove seeds. Add to iced water. The lemon flavor infuses almost immediately! Super refreshing and even my boys love it. They request lemon water over any other drink throughout the day.
TIP: If 1 lemon is too sour for you, just start with a couple slices instead. Don’t forget to remove the seeds!
After several months of consistently drinking lemon water, I have lost a few pounds and notice I don’t overeat at mealtime. Especially if I drink a lot right before I eat.
