Are you a mom who secretly dreams of tailgating but has been trapped in a web of child-rearing responsibilities? Fear not, oh noble moms of the tailgate-less realm! It’s time to break free from the shackles of sippy cups and stroller juggling and embrace the chaotic, messy, but undeniably fun world of family-friendly tailgating.

Because, let’s face it, nothing screams family bonding like slathering barbecue sauce on your face while cheering for your favorite team!

1. Embrace the Chaos

Ah, chaos – the lifeblood of every parent’s existence. Why not bring it to the tailgate too? Forget about meticulously planned schedules and organized snack times. The true essence of family-friendly tailgating lies in the beautiful, unpredictable whirlwind of pandemonium.

So, let the kids run wild, spill mustard on their shirts, and cheer at the top of their lungs.

After all, nothing spells ‘memorable family outing’ quite like a ketchup stain on the family heirloom picnic blanket.

2. Cooking: The ‘Oops, We Burnt It Again’ Edition

Let’s talk about cooking at the tailgate. For the moms who excel at turning kitchen disasters into gourmet feasts, this is your moment.

Attempt to grill those hot dogs, but don’t fret if they resemble charred pieces of firewood – you’ve just elevated them to a new level of smoky flavor!

And who can forget the classic ‘dip and drop’ technique when flipping burgers? It’s like culinary ballet, just messier.

3. Mastering the Art of Snacking

In the world of tailgating, snacking is an Olympic sport. Forget about your carefully crafted kale chips and quinoa bites. Embrace the true champions of the tailgate snack universe: chips, dip, nachos, and anything else dripping in cheese.

Bonus points if you manage to incorporate neon-orange cheese into at least three dishes.

Extra bonus points if you can find a way to add chips to everything.

4. Tailgate Games: A Lesson in Friendly Competition

Ah, the time-honored tradition of tailgate games – a chance for families to compete, bond, and argue about who cheated at cornhole. Show off your athletic prowess with the grace of a ballerina – or not.

Let’s be honest, attempting to gracefully toss a beanbag while wrangling a toddler is a feat worth celebrating in itself.

Just remember, it’s not about winning or losing; it’s about the laughter, the tears, and the questionable victory dances.

5. Dressing the Part: Fashion Faux Pas 101

When it comes to dressing up for a tailgate, throw fashion advice out the window. It’s all about comfort and team spirit. Pair your favorite team jersey with your most comfortable footwear – who says you can’t have style and practicality?

And if you’re feeling extra adventurous, don’t hesitate to don that foam finger and face paint.

Who cares if it takes a week to scrub off? You looked fabulous!

6. The Tailgating Toolbox: Essential Gear for Moms

Every mom needs a tailgating toolbox filled with essential gear for a successful game day experience. Make sure you have a foldable wagon to transport all your tailgating necessities from the car to the tailgate spot.

It’s the perfect solution for hauling coolers, chairs, and everything else you need for the day.

Additionally, consider investing in a portable grill with easy-to-use features.

Opt for a propane grill for quick and hassle-free cooking, so you can spend more time enjoying the festivities and less time fussing over charcoal.

TOP RECOMMENDATIONS:

7. Snack Attack: Creative Tailgating Recipes for Moms

Take your tailgate snacks to the next level with these creative and mom-approved recipes:

  • Mini Slider Bar: Set up a mini slider bar with various toppings and condiments. Let the kids customize their sliders for a fun and interactive meal.
  • Fruit Kebabs: Skewer fresh fruit chunks onto wooden sticks for a healthy and refreshing snack option.
  • Loaded Nachos: Create a nacho bar with plenty of toppings like cheese, jalapeños, guacamole, and sour cream. Let everyone build their ultimate nacho masterpiece.
  • Sausage and Veggie Foil Packets: Prepare foil packets with sausage, bell peppers, onions, and your favorite seasonings. Grill them for a flavorful and mess-free meal.
  • Homemade Lemonade: Whip up a batch of homemade lemonade with fresh lemon juice, sugar, and water. You can even add a splash of sparkling water for extra fizz.

FREE PRINTABLE: TAILGATE CHECKLIST

I have created a Tailgate Checklist just for you to print out and check off as you get ready for your day. There is also a blank checklist so you can make changes or create from scratch. No hard feelings!

Just fill out the info below and the printable download will be available instantly. FOR FREE!

8. Tailgate Entertainment: Keeping Kids Busy and Happy

Keeping the little ones entertained at a tailgate is crucial for a stress-free experience. Here are some family-friendly activities to consider:

  • Sidewalk Chalk: Bring along some sidewalk chalk and let the kids get creative on the pavement.
  • Face Painting: Embrace team spirit by painting your kids’ faces with your team’s colors and logos.
  • Mini Footballs: Bring a few mini footballs for a friendly game of catch.
  • Scavenger Hunt: Create a tailgate-themed scavenger hunt to keep the kids engaged and exploring.
  • Coloring Books: Pack coloring books and crayons to provide a calm activity for downtime.

9. Tailgating Safety Tips for Moms

Safety should always be a priority when tailgating with the family. Here are some tips to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience:

  • First Aid Kit: Pack a basic first aid kit with band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any necessary medications.
  • Sun Protection: Don’t forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats to shield your family from the sun’s rays.
  • Hydration: Keep everyone hydrated by bringing plenty of water. Consider freezing water bottles the night before to use as ice packs in the cooler.
  • Childproofing: If you have young children, bring safety gates or playpens to create a secure area for them.
  • Hand Sanitizer: In addition to handwashing facilities, have hand sanitizer readily available for quick clean-ups.

10. Capturing the Memories: Photos and Keepsakes

Document the fun and excitement of your family-friendly tailgate with photos and keepsakes. Consider these ideas:

  • Photo Booth: Set up a makeshift photo booth with team-themed props for memorable snapshots.
  • Team Gear: Purchase team-themed merchandise like hats, pennants, or foam fingers as souvenirs.
  • Autograph Book: Bring an autograph book for kids to collect signatures from fellow tailgaters or even mascot appearances.

11. The Cleanup Crew: Leaving No Trace

Before heading home, take the time to clean up your tailgate area thoroughly. Make it a family activity by involving the kids:

  • Trash Bags: Bring extra trash bags for collecting trash and recyclables.
  • Wipes and Towels: Have wipes and towels on hand for quick clean-ups and to wipe down surfaces.
  • Leave No Trace: Ensure you leave the tailgating area as clean as you found it. Leave a positive impression for fellow tailgaters.

In conclusion, family-friendly tailgating is not for the faint of heart. It’s a whirlwind of chaos, questionable culinary adventures, messy snacks, competitive games, and fashion statements that may make your teenage self cringe. But in the end, it’s about creating memories with your loved ones, even if those memories involve a few spilled drinks, burnt hot dogs, and maybe an accidental touchdown dance or two.

Meet Jackie

Hello! I'm a wife, mom of 2 boys, coffee and wine lover who lives in the Nashville, TN area. After growing up in Chicago and moving to St. Louis for 6 years, we decided that Music City was our new home! I have a neurological illness, called CIDP, that has turned my life upside down, and I have created this blog to have a little spot on the internet to share with you my life as a busy mama who loves to shop, eat, drink & be merry! So grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, and enjoy your time with me here at One Top Knot Mama. Cheers, friend!

The only somewhat cute picture I have taken this s The only somewhat cute picture I have taken this summer where sweat isn't dripping from my face or I look like a troll under a bridge. It was a busy summer. I took time away from my blog & socials to fill my cup☕️.

Going forward, I hope to still be active here on IG, but know I need time away from scrolling. I am not a fashionista. I am a shorts & tee girl, messy bun, my hair is mostly dry shampoo by the time Friday rolls around. I don't wear fake nails or eyelashes. It's just not me.

The mental mind f*ck that is social media tried to get me to be someone I am not. I am finding that I enjoy writing on my blog more. Creating printables, worksheets, checklists, gift guides etc than posing in outfits I buy specifically for content that I don't even feel comfortable in.

There are better women than me on here that do a great job of this, and I get huge doses of imposter syndrome. I was spiralling. Never feeling good enough. And that just isn't healthy.

I also don't want to be tone deaf. I know our country is in crisis right now, thanks to our so-called "leaders." If you support our current administration, please just unfollow me now. I know families are struggling to put food on the table. I know parents are choosing between paying the bills or medicine. Kids are watching as their parents are dragged away by masked men. And the list goes on and on.

I just don't have it in me anymore. I'm exhausted. And my kids need me now more than ever as we are navigating 4th & 7th grades. So if you're still here, thank you. Please check out my blog, sign up for my emails because I am very more active there!

My goal is to continue to spread positivity and relatable content to other moms, resources to help you in everyday life, and to use my space as a creative outlet to fill my cup up.

I appreciate you all. Here is a recommendation if you're in the Nashville area, try @brunchcollectivetn for some amazing coffee, food and atmosphere!

Happy September, talk soon.
