How Coloring as Self Care Can Help You Feel Better about Your Mental Health

Mental Health is something that is getting a lot of good press lately, and I am here for it. As someone who has suffered for years of depression, anxiety, PTSD, even post-partum depression, I am so happy that companies are marketing how mental health is just as important as your physical health. Self care is so very important. As moms, you can feel yourself being stretched so thin. School, cooking, laundry, cleaning, shopping, more cooking, more laundry, homework, sporting events, birthday parties, play dates, holidays, more laundry, more cooking, more grocery shopping…did I mention more laundry?

These tasks pile up faster than you can imagine, and you can begin to see how taking care of yourself starts to fall lower and lower on the totem pole of everyday tasks.

But you can’t fill from an empty cup.

You HAVE to make sure your cup is filled so you can continue to fill the cup for your family.

So today, I am going to show you how adult coloring is an AMAZING form of self care and for your mental health.

I had the opportunity to collaborate with the company, ColorIt, a family-run business that offers a wide variety of coloring books with high quality paper, top spiral binding, and high quality alcohol-based dual tip markers, gel pens and colored pencils.

I am so glad I learned about this company. Up until they reached out to me for this opportunity, I had been finding pages online to print out and color, or buying coloring books at the store, but the paper is always thin, and the designs seemed to always be similar.

When I got to see first hand the coloring books from ColorIt, I was amazed. The thickness of the paper, and the quality of these markers took adult coloring to a whole other level. I was addicted from the first point of contact of marker to paper.

The mandalas are beautiful, so unique and so detailed. I couldn’t decide which one I wanted to do first, so I actually had John, my husband, choose for me. The markers come in this fancy box with a designated spot for EACH MARKER. Including the name of the color. So you will NEVER lose a marker and the OCD in me is a very happy camper.

The markers also have a dual tip, with one side being fine point, and the other one is a broad tip for those bigger sections of white space.

I have never had markers this good, and no, I’m not just saying that. These markers have such amazing smoothness to them. The alcohol based ink makes it look like it’s going on like paint. You don’t see line strokes at all. Just look at these pictures!

And if you weren’t convinced, I hope this article from Project Helping will teach you why coloring is such a great form of self care. I will list them below, but their article explains each point really well, and I hope if you have never done adult coloring that you will give it a try after reading this!

  1. Reduces stress
  2. Great outlet
  3. Sparks creativity
  4. Practice mindfulness
  5. Utilizes your brain
  6. Coloring is fun!

You can see that these benefits are all super imperative for helping improve your mental health. I do not try to be an expert on mental health, but as a mom with a chronic illness who puts her health first, this is a great way to take care of yourself.

I urge you to try out ColorIt’s products. You can order right from their website HERE, and their shipping is super fast! Give them a follow on social media as well so you can see when they drop new books or products in their store.

When you order your coloring books, markers, colored pencils, etc, please comment below and let me know which ones you purchased! I can’t wait to see what you create. I did about four pictures this past weekend, and even my mama friends joined in while we had a bonfire the other night.

One argument I want to add is that sometimes I can’t sit still, and I need to be doing something with my hands, even just watching TV. So this is a great outlet and way to keep my hands busy, but it’s also mindless and you don’t need to take your attention away from your favorite binge worthy show. You could take these coloring books on a camping trip, getaway, picnic, wine night, etc. The possibilities are endless!

How are YOU going to fill your cup up? I truly hope you try adult coloring with ColorIt.

The only somewhat cute picture I have taken this s The only somewhat cute picture I have taken this summer where sweat isn't dripping from my face or I look like a troll under a bridge. It was a busy summer. I took time away from my blog & socials to fill my cup☕️.

Going forward, I hope to still be active here on IG, but know I need time away from scrolling. I am not a fashionista. I am a shorts & tee girl, messy bun, my hair is mostly dry shampoo by the time Friday rolls around. I don't wear fake nails or eyelashes. It's just not me.

The mental mind f*ck that is social media tried to get me to be someone I am not. I am finding that I enjoy writing on my blog more. Creating printables, worksheets, checklists, gift guides etc than posing in outfits I buy specifically for content that I don't even feel comfortable in.

There are better women than me on here that do a great job of this, and I get huge doses of imposter syndrome. I was spiralling. Never feeling good enough. And that just isn't healthy.

I also don't want to be tone deaf. I know our country is in crisis right now, thanks to our so-called "leaders." If you support our current administration, please just unfollow me now. I know families are struggling to put food on the table. I know parents are choosing between paying the bills or medicine. Kids are watching as their parents are dragged away by masked men. And the list goes on and on.

I just don't have it in me anymore. I'm exhausted. And my kids need me now more than ever as we are navigating 4th & 7th grades. So if you're still here, thank you. Please check out my blog, sign up for my emails because I am very more active there!

My goal is to continue to spread positivity and relatable content to other moms, resources to help you in everyday life, and to use my space as a creative outlet to fill my cup up.

I appreciate you all. Here is a recommendation if you're in the Nashville area, try @brunchcollectivetn for some amazing coffee, food and atmosphere!

Happy September, talk soon.
