Whether you’re exploring a local park, hiking trail, or even your backyard, this activity is perfect for families looking to connect with nature and discover its wonders. Grab a pencil and some paper, and let’s embark on a journey to find the treasures of the natural world!

Instructions:

  1. Print the Scavenger Hunt List: Before you head out on your nature walk, print out copies of the scavenger hunt list for each participant. You can customize the list based on your location and the age of your children.
  2. Explore the Outdoors: Take a leisurely stroll through the natural environment, keeping your eyes peeled for items on the scavenger hunt list. Encourage your children to observe their surroundings closely and use their senses to explore.
  3. Mark Off Items: As you spot each item on the list, mark it off with a checkmark or a sticker. Feel free to take photos or collect items (like leaves or rocks) to bring home as souvenirs of your adventure.
  4. Celebrate Discoveries: Once you’ve found all the items on the list (or as many as you can), gather together to celebrate your discoveries. Share stories about what you found and what you learned about the natural world.
  5. Extend the Fun: Keep the adventure going by challenging each other to come up with your own nature-themed scavenger hunt for the next outing!

2. Plant a Tree or Garden

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than by getting your hands dirty in the soil? Whether you have a backyard oasis or just a sunny windowsill, there’s always room to grow something green.

Let your kids pick out their favorite flowers or veggies to plant, and watch as their little faces light up with excitement as they see their garden come to life.

3. Organize a Neighborhood Cleanup

Teach your kids the importance of giving back to their community by organizing a neighborhood cleanup. Grab some gloves and trash bags, and hit the streets to pick up litter.

Not only will you be making your neighborhood a cleaner, safer place, but you’ll also be instilling valuable lessons about responsibility and caring for the environment in your children.

4. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Show your kids that small actions can make a big difference by practicing the three Rs together: reduce, reuse, and recycle. Get creative with reusing household items – turn old t-shirts into tote bags or repurpose glass jars into storage containers.

Set up recycling bins in your home and make a game out of sorting materials together.

5. Cook a Plant-Based Meal

Gather your little sous chefs and whip up a plant-based meal together. Not only is cooking with your kids a fun way to spend quality time together, but it’s also a great opportunity to teach them about healthy eating and sustainability.

Choose recipes featuring seasonal, locally sourced ingredients, and get ready to enjoy a delicious, eco-friendly feast as a family.

    • Serve over brown rice or noodles for a satisfying and nutritious meal.
  2. Black Bean Tacos:

    • Drizzle with a simple vinaigrette made from olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, salt, and pepper.
    • Add a protein source like grilled tofu or chickpeas, and garnish with avocado slices and toasted nuts or seeds for extra crunch.

6. Create Nature-inspired Art

Let your kids’ creativity run wild with nature-inspired art projects. Gather leaves, flowers, and other natural materials from your backyard or local park, and use them to create beautiful works of art.

Whether it’s painting, collage, or sculpture, the possibilities are endless – and the best part is, you’ll have some gorgeous new decor to display in your home.

Meet Jackie

Hello! I'm a wife, mom of 2 boys, coffee and wine lover who lives in the Nashville, TN area. After growing up in Chicago and moving to St. Louis for 6 years, we decided that Music City was our new home! I have a neurological illness, called CIDP, that has turned my life upside down, and I have created this blog to have a little spot on the internet to share with you my life as a busy mama who loves to shop, eat, drink & be merry! So grab a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, and enjoy your time with me here at One Top Knot Mama. Cheers, friend!

The only somewhat cute picture I have taken this s The only somewhat cute picture I have taken this summer where sweat isn't dripping from my face or I look like a troll under a bridge. It was a busy summer. I took time away from my blog & socials to fill my cup☕️.

Going forward, I hope to still be active here on IG, but know I need time away from scrolling. I am not a fashionista. I am a shorts & tee girl, messy bun, my hair is mostly dry shampoo by the time Friday rolls around. I don't wear fake nails or eyelashes. It's just not me.

The mental mind f*ck that is social media tried to get me to be someone I am not. I am finding that I enjoy writing on my blog more. Creating printables, worksheets, checklists, gift guides etc than posing in outfits I buy specifically for content that I don't even feel comfortable in.

There are better women than me on here that do a great job of this, and I get huge doses of imposter syndrome. I was spiralling. Never feeling good enough. And that just isn't healthy.

I also don't want to be tone deaf. I know our country is in crisis right now, thanks to our so-called "leaders." If you support our current administration, please just unfollow me now. I know families are struggling to put food on the table. I know parents are choosing between paying the bills or medicine. Kids are watching as their parents are dragged away by masked men. And the list goes on and on.

I just don't have it in me anymore. I'm exhausted. And my kids need me now more than ever as we are navigating 4th & 7th grades. So if you're still here, thank you. Please check out my blog, sign up for my emails because I am very more active there!

My goal is to continue to spread positivity and relatable content to other moms, resources to help you in everyday life, and to use my space as a creative outlet to fill my cup up.

I appreciate you all. Here is a recommendation if you're in the Nashville area, try @brunchcollectivetn for some amazing coffee, food and atmosphere!

Happy September, talk soon.
