I don’t know about you, but my kids are growing at warp speed. They are changing every day, getting older each minute, and sometimes it catches me way off guard. Sometimes I just want to catch up with them, and hear what they have to say about what they like, what drives them, what influences them, and what they care about.
This weekend, as we were battling strep throat, Max’s birthday and a snow storm, we really had nowhere to be and just had time to be together. The kids were bored, I could tell, they were fighting, picking on each other, being super annoying. So I thought up a game. Keep reading to find out!
If you REALLY want to get to know your kids, and have fun while doing it, you need to sit down and have a conversation with them. But make it fun! We so happened to be playing Simon Says, and when I couldn’t think of anymore, I started saying, “Simon says, shout your favorite…color!”
“Simon says…shout your favorite number!”
“Simon says, shout your favorite food!”
And they LOVED IT! By making it a game, they responded and opened up. Max, our youngest, who just turned 6, really surprised me. He knows more than I thought and could tell me things I didn’t even know he knew! (Example: favorite season, favorite day of the week, favorite body part, favorite city, favorite month)
We have done this kind of interview game thing before, and it had been awhile, so it was really neat to see how much their answers have changed. Joey and Max even started thinking of their own favorites and feeding off of each other to come up with more. This went on for a good 2 hours! I was laughing so hard, they got so excited, and they loved every minute of it. This is also good for dinner time conversations, or long car rides, or days when you just don’t know what to do with yourself anymore.
This is something that would be truly memorable to do one time per year so you can see how much their responses change.
The more questions I asked, the deeper they got. The questions weren’t all surface-level, and they really had to think. See below for examples. And I have created a printable that you can print out and use for your kids!
This is something that would be truly memorable to do one time per year so you can see how much their responses change. And I bet they would love to see what answer they had in years past as they get older.
So you have your pretty general basics, which is what we started with. Favorite color, number, shape, letter, holiday, food, etc. But once those were all asked, you need to start thinking of more because they keep asking for more questions. Need help? Look no more, just keep reading.
Go ahead and start asking these questions to your kids!
Get to know them.
Answer with them so they can get to know you.
Write your answers down and keep these memories for years to come.

I can’t wait to hear how much your kids’ faces light up when you start asking them these questions. Do you have any other ideas? Comment below and I will gladly add them to this list. Don’t forget to print out the question list and fill it out for each of your kids. And save it so you can re-print every year and interview your kids. You can make it fun for the whole family. You’ll be surprised how much your kids have an opinion. I honestly feel like I learned so much about my boys from this interview game.
This is also a great activity for grandparents! Sometimes kids can be a little shy around relatives they don’t see often. And with the pandemic, I’m sure this is all too relatable.
So give the grandparents something to talk about with their grandkids with this interview game.
How fun for all of them!
